Our favourite new smart home tech from CES 2017 Las Vegas

When it comes to the new smart home tech from CES 2017, we’ve got you covered. The international Consumer Electronics Show, being hosted in Las Vegas, is in its 50th year of exhibition and is one of the world’s biggest tech shows, home to the latest futuristic innovation that’s in development and launching soon.

And because it’s owned and produced by the Consumer Technology Association, the technology trade association attracts the world’s business leaders and pioneering thinkers to a forum where the industry’s most relevant issues are addressed. So, without further ado, here’s the rundown of our favourite new smart home tech from CES 2017 that includes wireless connected devices with personal privacy and cyber security as their top priority, connected kitchen devices to reduce food waste, and an automated cat feeder. I know!

The ultra-secure wireless router with unrivalled privacy for your digital life

Norton have set out to change WiFi forever and we’re right onboard with them in their endeavour. As more smart connected devices enter the home, the need for better built routers that can actually defend your private data against hackers is one we’ll be supporting ’til the cows come home. This is definitely one of our favourite new smart home tech from CES 2017 – anything that helps with data privacy and cyber security is a must have.

Standard WiFi routers that broadband providers supply are inherently underpowered, making it hard to implement effective security systems, with their basic functions requiring them to accept requests from anywhere on the worldwide web. That combination naturally makes them easy targets for hackers, who can use the devices to launch ransomware attacks. So, here’s Norton Core, the ultra-secure WiFi router to protect your connected home.

The smart fridge camera that tells you what to cook and what's expiring soon

The Smarter FridgeCam allows you to check what’s in the fridge via an app and alerts you when food’s due to expire so you can automatically replenish the fridge. This new smart home tech from CES 2017 showcased the Smarter Chef app too that ensures you make use of all the food suggesting recipes based on what’s available. No more constantly checking the fridge for food that may have magically appeared since you last checked half an hour ago…

Connected kitchens are growing in popularity with initiatives like the impressive new fire safety oven preventing fires and false alarms by connecting to Google’s Nest Protect. But this one on show at CES 2017 is something else! If your budget stretches further than a fridge camera, check out this full on LG Smart Connected Refrigerator.

A smart oven that preheats, sets timers and temperatures, all from your phone

American kitchen appliance company GE Appliances have teamed up with Drop Recipes to create the ideal connected oven application that lets users preheat the oven, select the mode, set timers, and also set temperature – all using your smartphone from wherever you’re connected. From within the Drop app, you can choose the recipe you’re cooking and control the different oven settings from within. Now we’re hoping this technology hops across the pond to the UK, but we don’t see any plans as yet.

GE Appliances are leading the way with kitchen connectivity, especially with their latest Drop partnership integrating with Nest Protect. When the detector senses smoke, it can turn off the oven. With the ability to tell when no one’s home, the Nest Protect can notify you if you’ve left the oven on after making your morning porridge.

This automated cat feeder is every busy cat owner's dream invention

It wouldn’t be a tech innovation roundup without one for pet-lovers would it? Never has it been easier to make sure your little bundle of joy is well fed and healthy – even when you’re away from home. Food and drink supplies can be automated and timed to a routine to be activated remotely via the smart connected Catspad app. First shown on a popular crowdfunding site last year, this clever invention, claimed to be the only cat food dispenser that allows you to schedule your cat’s meals and monitor their nutrition from anywhere in the world using the app, is a great way to keep up with your cat’s daily consumption rate whilst receiving notifications of low water too.

Now there are some smart innovations that solve problems that aren’t really there, but what we like about Catspad’s Smart Food & Water Dispenser is the ability to measure and register how much your cat consumes by accessing all the technical data on your smart phone. You can check how much stock of food there is and the water levels and you can keep tabs on your cat’s movements with a special collar or the microchip. Top marks.
